Abstract

Recently, community mapping has been practiced on a variety of topics, serving as an opportunity to increase interest in local communities. Map making has been mostly the work of governments for a long time, and as top-down approaches to regional development have not yielded expected outcomes, participatory action research has been in practice to understand the local community and find ways to improve the situation. Mapping is included important part of such research; in the case of developing countries, the needs are emphasized in the use and management of resources by indigenous people distorted during the colonial rule; in the case of developed countries, efforts to promote regional development by discovering the potential and assets of local communities have led to map production activities. Both emphasize the map making process involving participants’ communication and collaboration to define and improve local issues. The demand for map production turns into the widely practiced community mapping as web mapping services became available with the development of geographic information systems technology. Community mapping will be more appropriate and diverse in use if its understanding considers the efforts in mapping activities and local development being closely connected.

최근 커뮤니티매핑이 다양한 주제를 지도로 제작하며 지역사회에 대한 관심을 높이는 계기가 되고 있다. 지도 제작은 오랫동안 정부 주도로 이루어지고 지역발전 또한 하향식 접근이 성과를 내지 못하며, 지역사회에 대한 이해와 상황 개선으로 이어질 수 있는 방안 모색이 참여 행동 연구로 이어진다. 여기에 지도 제작 또한 중요한 활동으로 포함되는데, 발전국의 경우 지역사회의 잠재력과 자산을 발굴해 발전 방안을 모색하고, 개발도상국의 경우 식민 상태에서 벗어나며 토착 주민의 자원 이용과 관리를 권한을 표출하려는 수요가 지도 제작 활동으로 나타난다. 양자 모두 주민의 관심과 참여에 기반한 지도 제작 과정을 강조한다. 지역 문제를 지도로 나타내려는 수요는 디지털 기술의 발달과 웹지도 제작 서비스가 이용 가능해지며 커뮤니티매핑으로 불리며 확대되고 있다. 지역주민 참여의 지도 제작과 공유를 의미하는 커뮤니티매핑은 지도 제작 그리고 지역 단위의 발전을 도모하는 노력 양자를 연계된 활동으로 이해를 확장하면 보다 적실하고 다양한 활용이 가능할 것이다.
