Developing and Evaluating a River-Based Environmental Geography Program to Foster Ecological Citizenship in Elementary Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop an environmental geography program centered on local rivers and to analyze its impact on fostering ecological citizenship in elementary school students. A seven-session program was designed and implemented for third- to fifth-grade elementary school environmental geography club members, reflecting the four dimensions of ecological citizenship (virtue, knowledge, skills, and attitudes). The program consisted of the stages of interest, exploration, investigation, and action, and included local news analysis, field trips, community mapping, community engagement, and proposal activities. Data collected from teacher observation logs, student reflection logs, and in-depth interviews were qualitatively analyzed. Key findings are as follows. First, in the virtue dimension, participating students fostered a character that values ​​public values ​​and fosters coexistence with river ecosystems based on justice, consideration, and empathy. Second, in the knowledge dimension, they enhanced their ecological knowledge, understanding the complexity and interconnectedness of river environments. However, differences in political knowledge acquisition were observed across students' developmental levels. Third, in the skill dimension, they demonstrated critical thinking, reflection, and communication skills through the process of solving environmental problems related to local rivers. Fourth, in the area of ​​attitude, participants recognized environmental issues arising in rivers as community issues and demonstrated a willingness to voluntarily participate as ecological citizens. This study is significant in that it presents a concrete, feasible model for a river-based environmental geography program aimed at fostering ecological citizenship in elementary school students.

본 연구의 목적은 지역 하천을 중심으로 한 환경지리 프로그램을 개발하고, 해당 프로그램이 초등학생의 생태시민성 함양에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 초등학교 환경지리 동아리에 참여한 3~5학년을 대상으로 생태시민성의 네 영역(덕성, 지식, 기능, 태도)을 반영한 7차시 프로그램을 설계하여 적용하였다. 프로그램은 관심-탐색-조사-실천 단계로 구성되었으며 지역 기사 분석, 현장 답사, 커뮤니티 매핑, 지역사회 참여 및 제안 활동을 포함하였다. 교사 관찰일지, 학생 성찰일지, 심층 면담 자료를 수집하여 질적으로 분석하였고 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여 학생들은 덕성 영역에서 공공의 가치를 중시하고 정의, 배려, 그리고 공감을 바탕으로 하천 생태계와 함께 살아가는 인격을 함양하였다. 둘째, 지식 영역에서 하천 환경의 복합성과 관계성을 이해하는 생태학적 지식을 증진하였다. 그러나 정치적 지식 습득에 있어서는 학생의 발달 수준에 따라 차이를 보였다. 셋째, 기능 영역에서 지역 하천의 환경문제를 해결하는 과정을 통해 비판적 사고, 성찰, 의사소통 능력을 발휘하였다. 넷째, 태도 영역에서 하천에서 일어나는 환경문제를 공동체의 문제로 인식하고 생태시민으로서 자발적으로 참여하겠다는 의지를 보였다. 본 연구는 초등학생을 대상으로 생태시민성 함양을 위한 하천 기반 환경지리 프로그램의 구체적 실행 가능 모델을 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
