Abstract

China’s ‘Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom’ were registered as World Heritage sites in 2004, along with North Korea’s ‘The Complex of the Koguryo Tombs.’ The problem is that, despite the fact that they are both Goguryeo relics, China and North Korea have different historical perceptions of Goguryeo history. Goguryeo was an ancient territory of the Korean Peninsula, but is currently part of Chinese territory. ‘Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom’ reveals differences in heritage interpretation due to discrepancies between the past national territory and the current territory. This paper criticizes the nationalist heritage interpretation influenced by China’s Northeast project by analyzing the World Heritage nomination text China submitted to UNESCO. We propose an inclusive heritage interpretation as a way to overcome China’s nationalistic heritage interpretation. Inclusive heritage interpretation is an approach that reflects the historical perspectives and heritage interpretations of various groups, moving away from a nationalistic perspective, and thereby seeking to understand heritage from a broader perspective beyond the position of a specific country or ethnicity.

중국의 ‘고대 고구려 왕국 수도와 묘지’는 북한의 ‘고구려 고분군’과 함께 2004년 세계유산으로 등재되었다. 문제는 같은 고구려 유적임에도 불구하고 중국과 북한의 고구려사에 대한 역사 인식이 달랐다는 점이다. 고구려는 한반도의 옛 영토였으나 현재는 중국의 영토에 포함된 지역으로 ‘고대 고구려 왕국 수도와 묘지’는 과거의 국가 영토와 현재 영토의 불일치에 기인한 유산 해석의 차이를 드러낸다. 본 논문에서는 중국의 고구려 유산 세계유산 등재 신청서에 나타난 고구려사 인식을 살펴보고, 중국의 동북공정이 영향을 미친 역사, 유산 해석에 대한 비판을 중심으로 논의를 전개한다. 중국의 국가주의적 유산 해석을 극복하는 방법으로 포용적 유산 해석을 제시한다. 포용적 유산 해석은 국가주의적 관점에서 벗어나 다양한 집단의 역사적 시각과 유산 해석을 반영하고, 이를 통해 특정 국가나 민족의 입장을 넘어서서 보다 넓은 시각에서 유산을 이해하려는 접근법이다.
