Abstract
Universities have a tradition to contribute to community by providing services along with teaching and research. Service-learning has begun to promote effective learning while giving helping hands to local problems. Recently, service-learning has evolved to emphasize critical approach and place-based community engagement for sustainable collaborative partnership between university and community. Geography is good discipline to work with community engagement through mapping and fieldwork which are essential part of the curriculum. Fieldwork is important to explore the phenomena learn from classroom in real world, but community engagement with local survey and mapping, and action research leads to the development of community geography. Introduced are local and international fieldwork attempts by Jeju National University. A fieldwork focuses on a local problem with population decline; students participate in-depth local interview survey, and put the gathered information into completing a research paper. University international volunteering usually includes teaching classes in developing countries, but efforts to understand locales including data gathering, survey and questionnaire enhance critical over compassionate approach and community engaged activities.
