Effects of an Empathy Education Program Reflecting More-than-human Geographies on High School Students’ Empathy

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop an empathy education program that reflects a more-than-human geographical perspective and to analyze its effects on students’ empathy. The program centers around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster as an empathetic context and utilizes Svetlana Alexievich’s Voices from Chernobyl as a key instructional material. The program was designed to foster empathy toward various human and nonhuman subjects affected by the event. The findings are as follows. First, the empathy education program incorporating a more-than-human geographical perspective effectively enhanced students’ empathy. All sub-components of empathy, including perspective-taking, imaginative engagement, empathic awakening, and empathic concern, showed significant improvement. Second, the program meaningfully contributed to expanding the scope of empathic targets. Participants developed the ability to understand and empathize with not only humans but also natural elements and non-human entities. This study is significant in that it explores the potential for empathy education by integrating more-than-human geographies, and offers a practical approach to implementing empathy education within the context of geography education.

이 연구의 목적은 인간 너머의 지리 관점을 반영한 공감교육 프로그램을 개발하고, 해당 프로그램이 학생들의 공감에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 체르노빌 원자력 발전 사고를 공감적 상황으로 설정하고, 스베틀라나 알렉시예비치의 ‘체르노빌의 목소리: 미래의 연대기’를 수업 도구로 활용하여 인간과 비인간을 포함한 다양한 주체의 문제 상황에 공감할 수 있도록 프로그램을 개발하였다. 프로그램 적용 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인간 너머의 지리 관점을 반영한 공감교육 프로그램은 학생들의 공감 능력을 향상시키는 데 효과적이었다. 조망 취하기, 상상하기, 공감적 각성, 공감적 관심 등 공감의 모든 하위 영역 점수가 유의미하게 상승하였다. 둘째, 공감 대상 범위의 확장과 관련해서도 의미 있는 결과를 도출하였다. 참여자들은 본 프로그램을 통해 인간을 넘어 자연물, 비인간 주체에 대해 이해하고 공감하는 능력을 증진할 수 있었다. 이 연구는 인간 너머의 지리 관점과 공감교육을 결합하여 새로운 공감교육의 가능성을 모색하고, 지리교육 맥락에서 공감교육을 실행할 수 있는 실질적인 접근 전략을 제시하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다.
