Rethinking Architecture-Related Learning Themes in Geography Education: the Necessity and Potential of New Geography Learning Themes Integrating Architecture and Geography

지리교육과정에서의 건축 관련 학습주제에 대한 성찰과 과제: 건축과 지리를 융합한 새로운 지리학습 주제 개발의 필요성과 가능성을 중심으로

Abstract
This study explores the integration of architecture into geography education in response to rising public interest, the expanding institutional role of architecture in public life, and recent curricular reforms in Korea. A review of the curriculum shows that traditional architecture-related themes -especially vernacular houses— remain constrained by environmental determinism and residual culture-oriented. Recent revisions, however, have introduced themes of sustainable practices and the creation of high-quality residential environments, reflecting a paradigm shift toward practical competencies for desirable place-making. To advance this shift, the study proposes three thematic directions: modernizing traditional themes with sustainability education, examining changes in architecture and everyday life through technological development, and fostering active citizenship through learning the basic concepts of architectural design.

본 연구는 건축에 대한 높아진 사회적 관심과 건축이 공공 삶에 미치는 제도적 영향력 강화 그리고 최근 지리교육과정의 변화에 따른 진로 비전의 강조와 새로운 지리학습 주제 개발의 필요성에 부응하여 건축학의 성과를 융합하여 지리교육의 지평을 확장하려는 배경에서 출발하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내 지리교육과정에서 건축 관련 학습주제 및 내용이 어떻게 구성되어 왔는지 성찰하고, 건축과 지리를 융합한 새로운 지리학습 주제 개발의 필요성과 가능성을 제안하였다. 우리나라 지리교육과정에서 건축 관련 전통적 학습 주제는 크게 3가지(자연환경을 반영한 전통가옥, 종교경관으로서의 사원 건축, 도시 내부구조와 경관으로서의 건축물)이다. 최근에는 개정 교육과정을 통해 질 높은 정주환경 조성과 지속가능성을 위한 건축적 실천, 이 두 주제를 중심으로 새로운 건축 관련 지리학습 내용이 풍부해지고 있다. 이는 바람직한 장소 만들기라는 실천적 역량 함양을 중시하는 지리교육 패러다임의 전환과 맞물려 있다. 이러한 변화 속에서 건축과의 융합을 통한 지리학습 주제 개발 영역으로, 전통적 지리학습 주제의 현대화 및 지속가능성 교육 강화, 기술 발달에 따른 건축공간과 생활의 변화, 건축 설계 관련 기초 개념 학습을 통해 정주환경의 질을 개선하는 능동적 시민 되기를 제안하였다.
