Transformative Directions in Geography Education through Critical Geopolitics: Focusing on Global Citizenship and Geography 비판지정학을 활용한 지리 교수학습의 전환적 탐색: 세계시민과 지리를 중심으로: 범영우^1†

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore a transformative direction for geography teaching and learning in the 2022 Revised National Curriculum by applying the perspective of critical geopolitics within geography education. Critical geopolitics posits that geopolitical discourses centered on the state are not objective truths but socially constructed narratives that reflect specific political agendas. From this standpoint, the study emphasizes the importance of cultivating a critical awareness that challenges fixed and binary spatial thinking. Such a perspective underscores the fluid and unstable nature of geographical realities, enabling students to develop a more dynamic and multilayered understanding of various regions and nations around the world. In particular, this study critically reconstructs traditional geographical perceptions that have been shaped by the peninsula-centered discourse of division and Cold War spatial scales. It highlights the educational potential for fostering a global civic perspective that transcends these limitations. This study notes that the 「Global Citizenship and Geography」 course in the 2022 Revised Curriculum provides geopolitical knowledge that is not confined to the spatial scale shaped by the Korean Peninsula’s division discourse and the Cold War regime, but instead possesses the dynamism to transcend such limitations. It argues that a critical geopolitical approach can offer the necessary dynamism to overcome these constraints. Accordingly, the study proposes geography teaching and learning strategies that facilitate an expanded understanding of the political and geographical contexts of space, while fostering students’ abilities for integrative reasoning and problem-solving amid complex international affairs. Ultimately, the application of critical geopolitics is expected to enhance students’ geographical imagination and critical global citizenship, thereby broadening the educational horizon of school geography.

본 연구는 지리교육에서 비판지정학의 관점을 적용하여 2022 개정 교육과정의 지리 교수학습 방향성을 전환적으로 탐색하고자 한다. 비판지정학은 국가 중심의 지정학 담론이 객관적 사실이 아닌, 특정 정치적 목적을 반영한 사회적 구성물임을 전제하며, 이를 통해 공간에 대한 고정적이고 이분법적인 사고를 전환하는 비판적 인식을 강조한다. 이러한 관점은 지리적 현실이 고정불변하지 않고 유동적이며 불안정하다는 점을 바탕으로, 학생들이 세계의 다양한 지역과 국가들을 보다 역동적이고 다층적으로 이해할 수 있도록 돕는다. 특히 본 연구는 한반도 중심의 분단 담론과 냉전적 스케일에 의해 제한되어 온 기존의 지리 인식을 비판적으로 재구성하고, 이를 넘어서는 세계시민적 시각을 함양하는 교육적 가능성을 조명한다. 본 연구는 2022 개정 교육과정의 「세계시민과 지리」가 제공하는 지정학적 지식이 한반도 지정학 담론에 의해 형성된 분단과 냉전체제의 공간적 스케일에 국한되지 않고, 이를 넘어설 수 있는 역동성을 지닌다는 점에 주목한다. 이를 통해 공간의 정치·지리적 맥락을 확장적으로 이해하고, 복잡한 국제 정세 속에서 종합적 추론과 현실적 문제 해결 능력을 기를 수 있는 지리 교수학습 전략을 제안한다. 본 연구는 비판지정학의 적용이 학생들의 지리적 상상력, 비판적 세계시민성을 함양하고, 학교 지리의 교육적 지평을 넓히는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
