Abstract
This study examines how conditional relationships between urban land cover types and summer daily maximum temperature vary across temperature quantiles in Seoul. Using three years (2023~2025) of S-DoT (Smart Seoul Data of Things) observations and land cover proportions within 200m buffers around monitoring sites, multivariable quantile regression models were estimated for the 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th quantiles. Impervious surfaces were significantly and positively associated with daily maximum temperature across all quantiles, with coefficient estimates somewhat larger at the 90th and 95th quantiles than at the 50th and 75th quantiles. Tree cover was significantly and negatively associated across all quantiles, although the absolute magnitude of the coefficient estimates was smaller at the upper quantiles. Water areas showed negative associations across all quantiles, but none were statistically significant, while grass showed significant positive associations across all quantiles. These findings suggest that urban heat management should consider not only average temperature conditions, but also how associations between land cover types and daily maximum temperature differ across quantiles of summer daily maximum temperature.
