Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to explore the urban dynamics of Bandung both in the past and now, which is the second largest metropolitan region in Indonesia. Bandung is one of the major cities in Southeast Asia, which of them locate mostly in the tropic monsoon climate regions, and Bandung locates in the Bandung Basin with higher elevation formed by volcanic explosion. With the temperate weather due to higher elevation and the relatively locational advantages, Bandung has long history of settlements. In addition, with the massive tea and coffee plantations due to fertile soils from the volcanic deposits, Bandung region has been rapidly developed. Bandung city has a variety of complex urban characteristics from the traditional Islamic culture, Sunda’s traditional culture, cultural diffusion during the Dutch colonial period. Nowadays, with the rapid industrialization and modernization, Bandung has grown to the large metropolitan region with more than 8 million population, and has major industries developed such as textile industry, tourism, education.
