Abstract
This study examined the effects of a persona-chatbot-based virtual resident interview program on middle school students’ AI literacy and empathy toward residents of other regions using a mixed-methods design. To this end, an instructional program consisting of “interviewing–fact-checking–article writing” was developed, along with measures of AI literacy and empathy toward residents of other regions. The program was implemented with 174 middle school students, who participated in virtual resident interview activities focusing on Europe and Africa over a total of eight class sessions. Pre- and post-test data and student reflection journals were analyzed. The quantitative results showed statistically significant improvements in both AI literacy and empathy toward residents of other regions. The qualitative findings indicated that, through interactions with the chatbots, students developed an understanding of how to use AI and recognize its potential for error. They also came to perceive residents of other regions as individuals with concrete lived experiences and to understand their lives in relation to regional environments. This study is significant in that it developed and evaluated an instructional program using persona chatbots based on the Korean national curriculum and demonstrated the potential of persona chatbots for use in geography education.
