Abstract
This study shared the results of designing and implementing project-based geography lessons utilizing climate change issues in the local community. Students investigated actual heatwave preparedness facilities through fieldwork and proposed sustainable heatwave response measures for Jeonju city based on their findings. The participating students (N=245) identified growth in their willingness to act on climate change, communication skills, and confidence in their influence. Based on these results, the study suggests the following approaches for geography lessons to enhance climate change action competence: First, learners should recognize that the impacts and responses to climate change vary according to the ‘place’ they live in and understand the ‘interconnected’ relationships between phenomena. Second, by using spatial information technology, learners can develop confidence in their ability to analyze and explain the world and develop the ability to deeply reflect on their values and actions related to climate change or social systems. Lastly, opportunities to directly participate in and take action on climate change-related issues should be provided so that learners can develop confidence that they can have an influence in improving the places in which they live.
