Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the pedagogical effects of a community participation project in which participants recognize local problems based on emotional geographies, create their own spatial stories using spatial analysis and emotional mapping, and propose spatial strategies. The participants formed a group and selected community-related research topics from the perspective of emotional geographies and created spatial stories in the form of posters including Google Earth mash-up, heat map, and policy suggestions. To examine the pedagogical effects of the research project, a questionnaire regarding project experiences, reflective journals, and world clouds were analyzed. First, in the experience questionnaire, the participants evaluated the educational implications of the project and the pedagogical potential of emotional geographies positively. Second, through thematic analysis of participants’ reflections, the research extracted the following themes: understanding the implications and possibilities of emotional geographies, examining the effects and meaning of emotional mapping, contemplating the nature of data processing and spatial analysis, and suggesting strategies for improving the project. Word cloud visualization also supported the effectiveness of the project. This research was a creative attempt in which emotional geographies, geospatial technologies, and community participation were combined. This study merits inclusion in the literature in that it introduces the notion of emotional geographies into Korean geography education and provides insights into and basis for follow-up research.
