Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the implications for geography education by applying Lacan’s concept of jouissance to geographical objects. Rather than being based on psychology to conform to norms and adapt to reality, geography education needs to accept that human beings and geographical objects have intersubjectivity as they share objet petit a through grafting with Lacan’s psychoanalysis. Humans perform ethical acts to discern objet petit a from geographical objects, and through this, humans enjoy jouissance. As a result of analyzing Humboldt’s travel log and map of the case of climbing Chimborazo, it was found that the Real of the geographical objects, which humans desire, is realized in the form of ‘nothing’. And by applying this to the field of geography education, it was observed that students enjoy jouissance by establishing an ethical relationship with geographical objects through writing about geographical objects. The fact that jouissance has the ethics of elevating humans and geographical objects to ‘Being’ can be seen as an important reason to introduce Lacan’s perspective in geography education.

이 연구의 목적은 라깡의 주이상스 개념을 지리적 대상에 적용함으로써 지리교육에 주는 시사점을 고찰하는데 있다. 지리교육은 규범에 순응하고 현실에 적응하도록 하는 심리학에 기반을 두는 것보다, 라깡의 정신분석과의 접목을 통해 인간과 지리적 대상이 대상 a를 공유함에 따라 상호주체성을 가지게 됨을 수용할 필요성이 있다. 인간은 자신의 결핍을 채워 충만한 존재가 되고자 지리적 타자에게서 대상 a를 분별하려는 윤리적인 행위를 하는데, 이를 통해 인간은 주이상스를 향유하게 된다. 훔볼트의 침보라소 등반과 관련된 여행일지와 지도를 분석한 결과, 인간이 욕망하는 대상 a라는 지리적 대상의 실재가 ‘무’의 형태로 구현됨을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 이를 지리교육 현장에 적용하여 학생들이 지리적 대상에 대한 글쓰기를 통해 지리적 대상과 윤리적 관계를 맺음으로써 주이상스를 향유함을 확인할 수 있었다. 주이상스가 인간과 지리적 대상을 ‘존재’로 고양시키는 윤리성을 지닌다는 점은, 지리교육에서 라깡의 관점을 도입해야 하는 중요한 이유가 된다고 볼 수 있다.
